The steps necessary to achieve the GOSESO goals and objectives were launched in three phases. Phase I (Feasibility Study and Partnership Building), which started in the summer of 2005 and was completed in June 2006, consisted of: 1) Feasibility assessment based on feedback from potential stakeholders; 2) partnership building among local people in Tanzania, including representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations; and 3) selection of the Kitobe Forest as the site and headquarters for the school operations.
Phase II (School without Walls), which started in 2006 and was completed in 2008, consisted of: 1) Design of our grass-roots curriculum, which harnesses the diverse talents and aspirations of youth to forge understanding, stability, and peace; 2) creation of non-profit sister organizations in both Tanzania and the United States; 3) further development of the network of local and international stakeholders; and 4) acquisition of a significant portion of Kitobe Forest through democratic means with the local citizenry and the government of Tanzania.
Phase III (School within Walls) began in fall 2008 and is anticipated to be completed in 2015. This phase includes the construction of an environmentally friendly residential campus and implementation of indigenous-based curriculum specific to GOSESO that emphasizes the coexistence of humans and wildlife. Campus construction is currently underway. We continue to implement and refine our research, conservation, and education as well as economic and agricultural outreach programs. We also continue to recruit experienced faculty with outstanding credentials, those who will create the best environment for students to learn and apply information, to work individually and in groups, and to establish learning as a life-long process. Currently, GOSESO's stage of organization could be described as "project development."
